Contributions
For nearly 50 years, the Altria family of companies has been supporting not-for-profit organizations and strengthening communities around the world. Through our charitable initiatives, in-kind donations and employee involvement programs, we help feed the hungry, support the arts, assist victims and survivors of domestic violence, and help people and communities recover from natural disasters. We work to ensure that our contributions respond to serious needs, foster long-term solutions and help create programs that are models of excellence. In just the past ten years, we have donated more than $1.2 billion in cash and in-kind contributions.
In response to the devastation caused by the tsunami that struck Southeast Asia at the end of 2004, the Altria family of companies committed $6 million to relief efforts, and established a global matching gifts program to maximize employee contributions. We are partnering with relief agencies to ensure that these funds are used to support immediate and long-term relief projects.
In 2004, when devastating storms hit the U.S. and Caribbean during the most severe hurricane season in 30 years, we partnered with the American Red Cross, which sheltered nearly 425,000 people and provided more than 16 million meals and snacks to victims, and supported AmeriCares, the Pan American Development Foundation and the Volunteer Florida Foundation’s Florida Hurricane Relief Fund.
In 2004, our family of companies supported more than 400 organizations that are working to alleviate hunger with grants totaling over $12 million. Altria also funded collaborations to develop long-term solutions to hunger and improve meal and service delivery to vulnerable populations. We continued our support for meals-on-wheels programs for the elderly and our partnership with the Association of Nutrition Services Agencies (ANSA) to provide meals to people with HIV/AIDS.
The Altria family of companies increased its 2004 funding to organizations that provide services to victims and survivors of domestic violence. Altria Group, Inc. awarded 260 grants totaling over $7.5 million for legal services, counseling and shelter. We also provided support to state domestic violence coalitions to develop and implement victim safety and offender accountability programs.
Altria remains a leading arts patron through its support of diverse and innovative organizations. In 2004, we provided more than $10.6 million in grants including our sponsorship of the Romare Bearden Homecoming Celebration, a New York Citywide commemoration of one of America’s foremost artists; the opening season of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s new Frederick P. Rose Hall, the world’s first performing arts facility designed specifically for jazz; and Dan Flavin: A Retrospective, the first comprehensive exhibition of one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century, which opened at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and will tour to other cities.
