To stay informed about trends, expectations and business opportunities, Altria Group or its companies sponsor and participate in a number of organizations, in addition to our environmental grantees, which promote dialogue about environmental sustainability. These include:
IN THEIR WORDS
These partner organizations and our environmental grantee relationships provide us with important feedback about our environmental impacts and the opportunities we have to address them. The following are some examples of their perspectives:
The Conservation Fund profiled Philip Morris USA’s Natural Treatment System as a case study in A Sustainable Chesapeake: Better Models for Conservation
“Across our watershed, there is near universal agreement that the Bay ecosystem is vital to our quality of life. Nevertheless, we are currently witnessing a profound watershed-wide ecosystem collapse evidenced by deforestation, rapid conversion of open space, loss of fish and wildlife populations and dangerously poor water quality… As with many conservation professionals, we are working to reverse these trends by restoring and sustaining the natural resources in our watershed.
We feel strongly that environmental sustainability is a matter of intergenerational responsibility, and we are committed to finding ways to meet the needs of the present without compromising the opportunity of future generations."
"We believe the Philip Morris USA natural treatment system provides the Chesapeake community with a successful project that has moved us one step closer to a sustainable future, and which can be replicated in communities across the watershed.”
David Burke, Burke Environmental Associates
Joel Dunn, Coordinator, Sustainable Chesapeake Program, The Conservation Fund
“As an organization focused on the environment and community, we encourage all consumer goods companies to take an active role in reducing the environmental impacts of their products. The individuals we have worked with at Philip Morris USA are keenly aware of the cigarette litter issue and are proactive about finding solutions. They approach the issue with discipline, and expect the programs we develop to be research-based and measurable. There is still more work to be done, but the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program has made an impact in changing smokers' attitudes towards littering. More importantly, our work on the cigarette litter issue has provided a model and foundation that has informed our programs for addressing littering of many other materials and products.”
