Sustainable Agriculture - Strategy & Approach - Altria

The sustainability of our agriculture supply chain is critical to our businesses. Altria Group’s operating companies seek to build business relationships that promote actions consistent with our Mission and Values.

Altria's tobacco operating companies purchase tobacco from growers, tobacco merchants and other suppliers. Additionally, our wine business grows and harvests grapes on its vineyards in Washington, California and Oregon and also purchases wine grapes from growers. While tobacco and grapes are critical to our businesses, in some cases, they are one of many crops managed by the grower or supplier.

Strategy & Approach

Our operating companies’ approach to sustainable agriculture is guided by Altria’s Mission & Values and human rights framework. The Altria Supplier Code of Conduct further clarifies expectations for all suppliers of Altria companies.

We help our suppliers continuously improve on-farm practices that contribute to agriculture sustainability.

Our operating companies interact with growers and agriculture communities in a productive and responsible way by:

  • gathering information to better understand the evolving landscape of sustainable agriculture and related issues surrounding farms and farming communities.
  • working within our sphere of influence by setting clear expectations for growers and encouraging other industry stakeholders to follow our example.
  • encouraging wider adoption of sustainable agriculture practices by working with stakeholders in education, university extension programs, relevant agencies, grower organizations and nonprofits.

Altria’s operating companies actively engage with others in support of a broad, agriculture-wide approach to effectively address challenges to sustainable agriculture in the U.S. and abroad. Governments, non-governmental organizations, other manufacturers, other buyers of agricultural products and growers all must work together to bring sustainable change to the agricultural supply chain.
