In 1822, George Weyman, inventor of Copenhagen Snuff, opened a tobacco shop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
While customers made his brand of tobacco one of the most popular in Pittsburgh, even Weyman himself could not have envisioned that his store would spawn a company that became the world’s leading producer and marketer of moist smokeless tobacco products, now called the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company.
Since its humble beginnings in 1822, USSTC has developed an American heritage and a close relationship with tobacco growers in Kentucky and Tennessee and manufacturing communities in Franklin Park, Ill., Hopkinsville, Ky. and Nashville that continue almost two centuries later.
USSTC joined the Altria family of companies in 2009. Today, USSTC’s role is to responsibly manufacture and market our brands to adult tobacco consumers in a financially disciplined way, and provide contract manufacturing services to Philip Morris USA for its smokeless products.
Our Copenhagen and Skoal brands are the moist smokeless tobacco segment's leading premium brands. We also make Red Seal and Husky. The smokeless tobacco category's volume grew approximately two percent in 2015, and our brands continue to be the brands of choice for the majority of adult smokeless tobacco consumers in the nation.
Our headquarters is in Richmond, Va. and our manufacturing facilities are in Nashville, Tenn.; Franklin Park, Ill.; and Hopkinsville, Ky.
