Education

In its commitment to supporting youth, Altria Group and its companies focus on the needs of young people both inside and outside of school. We support education by seeking high-impact ways to improve young people's opportunities to succeed in life and work as they reach adulthood. We support organizations working in and with schools to close the scholastic achievement gap for underserved youth, while also addressing the demand for a diverse, highly skilled, technically-oriented future workforce. For example, Philip Morris USA, an Altria company, supports our positive youth development giving through after school programs.

Altria focuses its investment in education in four areas:

  • Higher education and scholarship support
  • Middle and high-school enrichment programs for urban public schools, particularly those that contribute to:

              o Everyday student success

    o Math and science excellence

o Access to and preparation for learning after high school

  • Strengthening management skills among school leaders
  • Technical education at community colleges and universities, including agricultural studies programs at select land-grant institutions

To complement these focus areas, Altria makes grants to school-focused organizations for specific learning objectives. Our contributions primarily focus on metropolitan Richmond, VA and select initiatives in the Commonwealth of Virginia and in other communities where Altria's companies operate. Altria also supports major national scholarship organizations, and colleges and universities where we recruit future employees.

Altria’s 2008 education-related grants  totaled $5.9 million.
