Corporate Contributions

Altria Group's corporate contributions in 2008 totaled approximately $48 million in cash and $12 million in-kind. Corporate contributions were primarily directed to our focused giving areas but also included humanitarian aid grants, in-kind contributions and other charitable donations to support the communities where we live and work.

Our Strategic Focus Areas

We focus our giving in four key areas that align with our business goals:

  • Arts and Culture ─ Investing in leading arts and cultural organizations is one way we help to create vibrant and engaging communities. Thriving arts and cultural resources bring vitality and help attract creative people and intellectual capital to our communities.
  • Education ─ We believe it is critical to invest in the workforce of the future to help support a strong community and a healthy economy. Our commitment to the development of a highly talented and diverse workforce is the foundation of our business success.
  • Environment ─ Our companies depend on natural resources and so another focus area is the sustainability of these resources ─ particularly land and water. To help reduce the environmental impact of its business, Philip Morris USA, an Altria company, supports efforts that help reduce cigarette butt litter.
  • Positive Youth Development ─ Philip Morris USA invests in leading youth-serving organizations nationally with a focus on the southeastern United States to help provide youth with the positive support they need to make healthy choices and achieve full potential in school, work and life.

Humanitarian Aid

Altria and its family of companies share a tradition of responding quickly to national calls for humanitarian assistance. Altria has provided millions of dollars in support for victims and communities affected by disasters like Midwest flooding, California wildfires, Virginia tornadoes and hurricanes Katrina, Ike, and Gustav.

Altria's humanitarian aid grants totaled $1 million in 2008.

In-Kind Contributions

Altria also provides in-kind assistance to aid communities in the event of a disaster or emergency, or to help in the day-to-day operation of non-profit organizations and institutions of learning. In 2008, in-kind donations from Altria and its companies included office and engineering equipment, non-branded consumer incentive gear and the donation of portions of Altria's extensive art collection from its former New York headquarters location to art institutions that have been long-standing partners with Altria.

Altria's in-kind contributions totaled $12 million in 2008.

Other Charitable Activities

In addition to targeted giving within focused giving areas, Altria and its companies support other charitable activities.

Grant Criteria

Grant applications and requests for proposals are by invitation only. We generally do not accept unsolicited funding requests.
