Other Charitable Activities

Employee Giving

Employees of the Altria family of companies are actively involved in their communities. Altria provides funding to support company programs such as Matching Gifts, Dollars for Doers, the Altria Companies Employee Community Fund and volunteer activities. These programs support and supplement employee community involvement.

Altria's support for employee community involvement efforts totaled $4.2 million in 2008.

Civic Engagement

Altria actively supports civic engagement efforts including those that promote economic development, leadership development and cultural diversity within our home communities. For example, through the Greater Richmond Chamber Foundation, Altria supports regional economic development initiatives that are designed to strengthen the Richmond region by creating new jobs and capital investments. Altria also supports the National and Greater Richmond Urban Leagues through sponsorships of their annual conferences and banquets.

Altria’s civic engagement contributions totaled $1.5 million in 2008.

New York Grants

In 2008, Altria relocated its corporate headquarters from New York to Richmond, Va. We made a number of contributions to long-time philanthropic partners, particularly within the arts and humanities, to minimize the impact of our departure from the New York community on organizations which have relied on our past support.

Altria's New York Grants totaled $2.5 million in 2008.

Altria's Operating Companies' Contributions

Altria's operating companies' and business units support non-profit organizations and associations that advance business objectives. Examples include:

  • Charitable Contributions: Operating companies make occasional contributions to causes or programs they recognize as being effective and worthwhile. For example, Philip Morris USA (PM USA) which operated a manufacturing facility in Cabarrus, North Carolina, provided a grant to the Foundation for the Carolinas in Charlotte, North Carolina for a fund to benefit Cabarrus county local non-profit service providers. Business units also make contributions to the organizations and associations aligned with company activities or positions. For example, PM USA's local sales force supported Keep San Antonio Beautiful.
  • Sponsorships: Various business units support conferences or charitable events that provide opportunities to interact with specific business stakeholders like the CVS Caremark Charity Classic golf tournament or the 23rd Annual Great Sports Legends dinner benefiting the Buoniconti Fund to cure paralysis.

Altria companies' departments provided charitable funding totaling $5.5 million in 2008.

Altria and its family of companies' other charitable contributions provided support to employee giving programs, civic engagement, departmental funding, and New York exit grants totaling $13.7 million in 2008.
