As Altria Group's Chief Human Resources Officer, Charlie Whitaker is responsible for leading the strategy for Altria and its family of companies to attract, develop and deploy the talent needed to achieve our Vision and foster an exceptional employee experience that allows our organization to thrive.
As Chief Compliance Officer, Charlie oversees Altria's compliance and integrity program including the systems and initiatives to anticipate and mitigate compliance risk, detect and respond to potential non-compliance, and drive a culture of integrity. The intersection of Compliance and Human Resources enhances Altria’s effectiveness in these areas, particularly in building accountability of leaders at all levels to promote a culture of integrity.
Charlie has served in these or related capacities since 2009. Before that, Charlie was Vice President, Compliance and Brand Integrity for Philip Morris USA and Assistant General Counsel for Labor & Employment and Compliance. Charlie began his career with Philip Morris USA's Law Department in April 2002 as Senior Counsel for Labor & Employment.
Before joining PM USA, Charlie worked with the law firm of Hunton & Williams in Richmond, Virginia.
Charlie graduated from the University of Virginia with a bachelor's degree in history. He also received his juris doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was a member of the Virginia Law Review. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Boards of Directors of the Ethics Research Center in Washington DC and The Doorways in Richmond, Virginia. He also is the past Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Valentine, a Richmond history museum.
