At both the federal and state levels, Altria has supported efforts to enact comprehensive non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ individuals. We continue to support Congressional passage of the Equality Act and have joined the America Competes Coalition, which is advocating for the enactment of inclusive nondiscrimination laws that protect all Americans, including LGBTQ+ people. In 2020, we also joined other Virginia businesses in successfully advocating for the passage of the Virginia Values Act, which protects LGBTQ+ Virginians from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations and is the first comprehensive LGBTQ+ anti-discrimination legislation to pass in the south.
Altria has also filed amicus briefs supporting important LGBTQ cases, including the Supreme Court’s review of federal non-discrimination laws (Bostock v. Clayton County and R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Home v. EEOC) and the Ninth Circuit’s review of Idaho's law banning transgender women and girls from participating in sports consistent with their gender identity (Hecox v. Little). We are proud that our efforts have been recognized by the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index, the nation’s foremost benchmarking survey and report measuring corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ workplace equality. Since 2018, the Corporate Equality Index has designated Altria as one of the "Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality." Altria was also recognized in 2019 and 2020 as one of the "Best-of-the-Best Corporations for Inclusion" by the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce, in part based on our advocacy for LGBTQ+ legislative issues.
