In Government Affairs, we work closely with the executive leadership team and operating company leadership to identify public policy issues that are important to our businesses and the communities in which we operate. The democratic process is complex, and we look to engage responsibly with a variety of stakeholders where we can have impact. We engage directly with lawmakers to share who we are, where we are headed, and the vital role legislation and regulation play in shaping the future of our industry. We also partner with stakeholders through policy-oriented organizations focused on issues that impact our businesses.
We advocate for science-based approaches that support a business environment where our Vision of harm reduction can succeed.
We know Altria has a role to play in protecting the natural resources in which our businesses and communities rely. While we have engaged on environmental issues for a number of years, increasingly, there have been opportunities for us to responsibly engage on environmental policy that could affect our businesses.
For example, in 2020, Altria joined other companies in urging Congress not to lose focus on environmental issues as it works to address the far-reaching impacts of COVID-19. Specifically, we supported increased investments in clean energy infrastructure and grid modernization, the creation of new clean energy jobs, the improvement of the integration of renewable resources such as wind and solar and improved energy efficiency.
As the societal impacts of the climate crisis become more acute, it is critical for business and government to work together to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. We will continue to engage responsibly on this important issue.
